Spaugur.is
Spaugur's improved site, rebuilt from scratch.
Let's improve a little
After taking a closer look at what we were doing and thinking about the future, it became fairly obvious that we were a bit all over the place. We were a small team trying to do everything for everyone, which sounded good in our heads but wasn't quite working in reality. So we decided to simplify things a little and sharpen our focus. At the same time we had started working on the new dashboard for Spaugur, so the plan at first was just to update the old site and tie it all together. Then we looked over the site a bit more closely and basically just thought: yeah, no, this really isn't good enough anymore. The old site had served us well and done its job over the past few years, but both we and the company had changed a lot since it was built. It was simply time for a new site.
My role
The team was busy with other projects, so I took it on myself to start designing and building the new site. The new site was built on the same foundation as the old one, which used Next.js and the Pages Router. The codebase, however, had become tangled up with all sorts of services and tech we had stopped using long ago. So I decided to start with a proper cleanup, threw out everything that was no longer in use, did a deep clean of the code and upgraded the packages and tech to newer versions. We had also decided to shift the design direction a little. The older site had more of a “creative studio” vibe, but with the new site we wanted to move a bit more toward a corporate look. It still wasn't meant to become boring or stiff, just a bit more mature and better in tune with the company Spaugur had grown into.
What's next?
The site is still a work in progress and goes live once Spaugur's new dashboard is ready. So there's still quite a bit left to do before everything is finished. Some sharp-eyed people may have noticed in the screenshots that there is still AI-generated text and half-finished copy here and there. That's simply part of the project still being in development, and various things still need to go through a proper review and polish. This write-up will of course be updated once the new site and the dashboard formally go live.
